Bluesky, the decentralized social network proposal that took its first steps on Twitter, has finally arrived. It is already available in the App Store, but in order to access it you must have an invitation.
Since the start, Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, has supported the project. Bluesky aims to develop a social network that enables users to select their preferred recommendation algorithm.
Thus, we could leave aside the current practices, where it is the company itself that controls this section at will.
To make Bluesky a decentralized service, its developers have been working on what is known as Authenticated Transfer Protocol.
In this way, we obtain a federated social network, where we find separate networks within a single core.
Bluesky operates on four principles: account portability, algorithm, performance, and interoperability. This approach ensures that users have greater control not only over their preferred content but also over the transfer of their profile data to other service providers.
The successor of Twitter
Bluesky’s debut on the App Store unveils the first interface images of the application. While it’s still in beta, the service’s screenshots have unmistakable allusions to Twitter.
From the buttons to interact with the content to the way of displaying publications and the profile of users of the social network.
Despite having been in development for several years without much news, Bluesky has managed to appear at the ideal moment. Twitter is suffering one of its biggest crises in recent times, with hundreds of employees being laid off, office closures and the blocking of third-party clients.
That’s why, in case the bluebird social network went belly up, users have already begun to explore other waters, including alternatives such as Mastodon.
Fortunately, Bluesky’s testing appears to be progressing successfully. At the end of 2022, the app was still in internal beta within the offices. After only a few months, they’ve now chosen to broaden it to a larger number of users.
Thus, we are likely to see a public beta sooner than we think.
How to join the waiting list to test Bluesky
Bluesky’s website doesn’t offer much more details regarding its beta. Thus, we don’t know when it will be ready for the public, nor how many people have been able to access it so far.
However, if you want to be one of the first to try it out, the registration process for its waiting list is quite simple.
The launch of Bluesky Social has not yet been made official. There is no information about it on the platform’s blog, nor on Twitter or GitHub.
Is the social network similar to Twitter?
Bluesky Social AppStore shared images of the new social network.
For example, it features a username and photo. In addition, the shared content and graphics are very similar to Twitter.
Every post made on Bluesky Social features comment, repost, and like options.
The user profile in Bluesky Social has the same features as Twitter, including followers, followed accounts, images, and posts. The user has more control over their profile and data transfer than traditional social networks.
One Bluesky Social user commented on the platform’s AppStore that this new app will address the problems of centralized social networking “at a fundamental level.”
“I’m very excited to see how this app is pioneering this new era of social networking,” the user said.
Jack Dorsey undertook this new Bluesky Social project when he resigned from Twitter in 2021.
Bluesky has included a link on their official website that takes you to a section where you can enter your email address. Simply input your email and click the blue Join Waitlist button.
