South African digital artist, Andries Odendaal, has unveiled his long-awaited collection of generative art, FABRIK, in Cape Town today, April 30th, 2024. This meticulously crafted project, commissioned by NFTfi co-founder Stephen Young, represents nearly three years of artistic and technological exploration.
FABRIK is a free mint of 1,024 unique NFTs, designed to push the boundaries of generative art and express gratitude to the NFTfi community.

FABRIK: Where Art and Technology Collide
FABRIK embodies the culmination of Odendaal’s artistic vision and technical prowess. Its core lies in a sophisticated algorithm capable of generating a vast array of intricate artworks using simple geometric building blocks. Each piece within the series features repeating and interlocking parallelogram motifs, woven into mesmerizing geometric tapestries.
At larger scales, these interlocking shapes evoke a sense of order and stability, reminiscent of architectural structures. Conversely, when zoomed in, the shapes cluster together, forming intricate details resembling geological formations or natural processes.
Transparency and Innovation on the Blockchain
Odendaal meticulously crafted FABRIK using custom code, ensuring the integrity and longevity of the art by storing all metadata and instructions directly on the blockchain. The contrasting scales and textures within each piece create a captivating tension between stability and change, impermanence and structure.
The very algorithms responsible for the strict structural integrity within each artwork also introduce elements of decay and disintegration, blurring the lines between order and chaos.

“The name ‘FABRIK’ resonates with me,” Odendaal explains. “It evokes the notion of a fundamental underlying structure, like the ‘fabric of society’ or the ‘fabric of the universe.’ It also carries connotations of fabrication, which aligns with the artistic process.”

Minting Details and Community Access
FABRIK will launch as a free mint on the Ethereum mainnet, utilizing the ERC-721 standard. The collection is limited to 1,024 unique NFTs, with 1,000 reserved exclusively for whitelisted NFTfi users. The remaining 24 are allocated to the artist, project team, and the commissioner.
