At the Consumer Electronics Show 2023 (CES 2023), Taiwanese company HTC unveiled its new Vive XR Elite mixed reality headset, which it considers a “gateway” to the metaverse.

HTC Vive XR Elite
According to Cher Wang, co-founder and president of HTC, Vive XR Elite will be “the ultimate physical gateway to the multitude of experiences offered by Viverse, our version of the metaverse.”
Like Meta’s Quest Pro headset, Vive XR Elite can also be used as a mixed reality headset and includes a color RGB camera and hand tracking.
The headset includes two controllers compatible with HTC’s wrist tracker and includes hand tracking and capacitive sensing functions.
The battery can be removed to switch to goggle format when connected to an external power source and is said to provide two hours of full Vive XR use.

Another innovative component of the Vive XR Elite is interchangeable lenses for goggle wearers.
Priced at $1,099, the device functions as a virtual reality headset with a 110 wide FOV, 4K resolution and 90 Hz refresh rate, as well as directional audio, four wide FOV cameras and a depth sensor for 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) spatial accuracy.
At the time, Phil Chen, the company’s “head of decentralization,” predicted that “having a Bitcoin or other blockchain node stored in your phone will be commonplace in five years.”
HTC and Web3
In June 2022, HTC launched the HTC Desire 22 Pro smartphone, advertising it as a metaverse phone and highlighting integrations with the NFT wallet and Viverse. HTC has been outspoken about its intentions for the metaverse.
In 2018, it produced the Exodus 1 and Exodus 1s smartphones, with integrated cryptocurrency wallets and the ability to run a full Bitcoin node.
HTC makes no secret of its metaverse ambitions; the company is collaborating with blockchain Lamina1, founded by Neal Stephenson, author of “Snow Crash,” and Peter Vessenes, co-founder of the Bitcoin Foundation.
In a statement, HTC says it will use Lamina1’s tools to “enable more efficient sharing and management of assets between worlds and platforms,” meaning users will be able to migrate digital assets such as avatars, clothing and artwork between platforms in the metaverse.
At CES 2023, the tech company also announced a number of metaverse collaborations, including one with fashion magazine ELLE Taiwan, which will open a showroom in the Viverse metaverse.
Warner Music Taiwan will launch a “new world of music experiences” in Viverse, while Japanese creative platform pixiv will collaborate with HTC to introduce VRoid anime-style avatars in Viverse, using the open VRM standard.
To accelerate the creation of a socially open metaverse ecosystem, HTC is collaborating with Lamina1. HTC’s VIVERSE platform will use Lamina1’s layer one tool to facilitate the distribution and management of assets between worlds and platforms.
Users will be able to transport their digital objects (avatars, clothing, artwork, etc.) as they move through the metaverse.
