The Decentraland metaverse recently announced a new five-day event in the metaverse’s art districts. This event will take place August 24-28 and will be inspired by the Venice Art Biennale, as well as feature several surprises and features unique to the metaverse.

According to the organizers, Metaverse Art Week 2022 is designed to showcase the latest technological innovations in digital art and design development through an extensive virtual world fair.

“Metaverse Art Week 2022 comes at a crucial time for increased adoption of Web3 technology and decisions about our digital reality. We believe that the future of the Internet should be developed by decentralized communities that do not seek to profit from user data, imagination and creativity,” said Decentraland Foundation creative director Sam Hamilton. “This year’s Art Week is a love letter chronicling what the future generation of artists is doing in the metaverse.”

What will the Decentraland event consist of?

The new Decentraland event will consist of immersive art installations, artistic and conceptual productions, numerous never-before-seen NFT exhibitions, keynote lectures and more.

The main attractions will be located in Decentraland’s art districts, Soho Plaza, which will be transformed into an open-air museum, and Voltaire Art District, which will host group art exhibitions and lecture panels.

Artists and digital communities

Several personalities from the art world will also participate in the event, including Gavin Shapiro, who will premiere his Fibonacci piece, inspired by fractals and other patterns that appear in nature.

Metaverse Art Week 2022 will also feature the Cryptoarg exhibition at Art Plaza, which will feature a series of immersive metaverse installations inspired by major works such as “The Tower Labyrinth” and “The Pyramid Labyrinth.”

Decentraland intends to reaffirm the link formed between the art industry and Web3, therefore, the event organizers pointed out that the participants of the next edition of Metaverse Art Week will have different surprises and an immersive and unforgettable experience.

Highlights of Metaverse Art Week 2022

The Frida Kahlo Family, in collaboration with Ezel.Life, will launch Frida Kahlo Family Red House, an immersive experience showcasing the early part of Frida’s exceptional life.

This unique partnership brings never-before-seen artwork by Kahlo to the metaverse through Ezel.Life’s new NFT collection, allowing access to future releases of Kahlo content.

“We are thrilled to partner with Decentraland to bring Frida Kahlo’s family home, La Casa Roja, to the metaverse. This experience will uncover many previously unpublished stories and memories about Frida Kahlo’s challenges and triumphs that add depth to her exceptional life as an artist. La Casa Roja is the first of many exciting projects that Ezel.Life will deliver to digital audiences around the world, including immersive experiences at UNESCO World Heritage sites Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza,” said Pedro Quinzanos, co-founder and CEO of Ezel.Life. “We look forward to sharing our deep pipeline of unique content as we fulfill our mission to bring time, culture and humanity to Web3.”

Artnet, one of the largest online art communities, explores the idea of the Metaverse through performing arts, live poetry and AI during Metaverse Art Week.

In collaboration with renowned artists Sasha Stiles and Hsinyen Wei, among others, the art experiences take place at different venues throughout the week.

An auditorium will conduct panel discussions on the future of art and technology. Limited handheld devices from artists will be given away during the activation.

“What does it mean to experience art in the Metaverse? Artnet was founded over 30 years ago as the world’s first online art platform, and technology has always been at the core of our DNA. As a brand that prides itself on developing a critical conversation around art and technology, we wanted to explore the Metaverse in a meaningful context, to motivate thought and create truly unique encounters with art, which is why we invited performing artists, poets and AI, human and non-human, to interact with each other in Decentraland. We wanted to incorporate our users to experience something uniquely valuable in the Metaverse.” Jiayin Chen, vice president of Artnet.

Sotheby ‘s surprises with several new art collaborations, including the first jewelry sculpture in the metaverse with Metagolden. During Art Week, Sotheby ‘s will exhibit its permanent collection:

“Sotheby ‘s held its first sales dedicated to NFTs and digital art just 18 months ago. In that time, we were at the center of some of the most historic moments in digital art, from achieving record results for iconic projects like the Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks, to designing innovative ways to showcase digital art, not only in our physical galleries around the world, but also in Decentraland,” said Michael Bouhanna, vice president of Sotheby ‘s. “We were the first – and still the only – auction house to build a dedicated virtual gallery. Our Decentraland space has allowed us to curate creative and thoughtful exhibitions of both digital art and a range of physical artworks, such as Sandro Botticelli’s ‘The Man of Dolores, for which we transformed one of the galleries into an immersive, cathedral-inspired space.”

On behalf of the Decentraland Foundation, more than a dozen artists will exhibit their work in a virtual outdoor sculpture garden. On display in this exhibition are some of the largest-scale, high-fidelity works ever seen in Decentraland.

Curator David Cash brought this year’s theme “The World is Made of Code” to life with 3D sculptures and video works by industry leaders including Krista Kim, legendary image-maker Nick Knight and Lady Gaga’s creative director Nicola Formichetti, among others.

These pieces will be displayed alongside works from several of our featured galleries, including Artnet and Sotheby ‘s. Explore the outdoor sculpture garden to witness the full potential of 3D art at Decentraland and witness levels of creativity that stretch beyond the boundaries of reality into the realm of the surreal.

UXart Lab will feature internationally recognized Latin American masters from the 1960s such as, Julio le Parc, Beto Ressano, Eduardo MacEntyre and Gyula Kosice who represent the best of kinetic and pop art in the region, two of them currently on display at the Venice Biennale showing the global impact and the power of decentralization that crypto-art brings to society.

International pop artist Burton Morris, in collaboration with House of Tang, installed Pop!Wall, an interactive 3D art wall that resembles Morris’ famous popcorn artwork. The popcorn represents “the seed of a new idea,” a perfect graphic image to represent the explosive creativity and innovation brimming with Web3’s co-creation culture.

The ArtWall is located in Soho Plaza, where visitors are challenged to scale its structure and prove their aptitude in the metaverse with their elite parkour skills.

Those who make it to the top are rewarded with a free pair of Pop!Soles, Burton’s first NFT sneakers. Pop!Sole was provided by Banquet Labs.

Web3 Art Spaces

Decentraland’s mainstay, “Cash Labs Gallery” will launch its permanent collection, features different exhibits on each of its four floors.

The second floor will consist of pieces curated under the theme From Physical to Digital, highlighting NFT artists such as Damien Hirst, Laurel Charleston, Justin Aversano, Kenny Schacter, David Henry Nobody Jr, and others.

The second floor theme, Art for the Metaverse, highlights digitally native art practices by Krista Kim, Bryan Brinkman, IX Shells, David Bianchi, and more.

The third floor will feature an acquisition by SHOWstudio showcasing Nick Knight’s first NFT collection.

“One of the most exciting elements we can discuss regarding the metaverse is its limitless potential. Anything is possible, beyond the limits of reality,” said Cash Labs CEO and founder David Cash. “This is the case from a novelty perspective, such as the ability to levitate or fly, but also from a practical standpoint. If an artist wanted to create a 50-meter tall sculpture of a solid marble human figure in physical form, it would be prohibitively expensive. However, in the metaverse, anything is possible.”
