National Geographic Files Trademark Applications to Launch NFTs and Collectibles

National Geographic Society, a non-profit educational and scientific organization that publishes a monthly magazine of the same name, filed three trademark applications to begin issuing NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and virtual collectibles of audio, video and image files containing exclusive content from its research.

Following its partnership with the NFT Snowcrash platform, the organization applied to trademark the terms NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and NAT GEO and the iconic yellow rectangular frame of its logo.

The organization filed three trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), serial numbers 97744496, 97744492 and 97744489, according to USPTO patent and trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis, who shared the information on his official Twitter account, the applications were filed on January 6.

The collection features 1888 photographs, certified by NFT from 16 artists and photographers, depicting sunrise in different locations around the world. The launch is scheduled for January 17.

The patents would be used to offer NFT-related products and digital collectibles, such as audio, video and image files on current events, animals, exploration and scientific research, certified by National Geographic.

National Geographic Society also recently teamed up with Snowcrash, an NFT and Web3 platform, to launch the NFT collection called Genesis.

In the past, the organization has also shown interest in blockchain technologies, bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, seeking to educate the public on the fundamentals of this industry.

In a 2013 article following the collapse of Silk Road, National Geographic Society mentioned that bitcoin could change the course of the global economy.

Founded in 1888, National Geographic Society is one of the world’s oldest and most trusted nonprofit educational organizations on nature, wildlife and cultural preservation issues.

Their foray into NFTs will mark a turning point in the industry and give them greater exposure to these digital assets.

Other companies that have joined Web3

In doing so, the organization joins the likes of Intuit, Paramount Pictures, Ford and Nissan, which have also made a number of trademark applications related to cryptocurrencies, indicating a growing interest in the industry.
