What will Action City be like?
Action City will be a dedicated “LAND” with voxelized characters inspired by Lionsgate and Millennium Media’s fan-favorite film franchises. This partnership makes Lionsgate the first major entertainment company to enter The Sandbox.
Moving forward, Lionsgate and The Sandbox plan to create experiences that dive deep into the studio’s rich horror catalog. Liongate’s Land will host movie-themed experiences that players can interact with, while Action City will launch with film franchises such as Rambo, The Expendables and Hellboy.
“We can’t wait to open up our Lionsgate land in The Sandbox metaverse so fans around the world can create, play and explore our cinematic IP in ways beyond what’s possible in the physical world,” said Jenefer Brown, executive vice president and head of global live, interactive and location-based entertainment at Lionsgate. “We are excited about the new possibilities our strategic relationship with The Sandbox will offer our community.”

What will they be able to do in Action City?
All Lionsgate and Millennium content in Action City will allow users to create their own experiences through both original and familiar characters and worlds.
The voxelized characters will not only be visual props, but will also offer players utility as they can be used as avatars or in original player-created experiences.
“Our vision for The Sandbox has always been to bring to life thousands of colorful worlds where players can create their own original adventures alongside licensed content from their favorite movies, TV shows, anime and more,” said Sebastien Borget, COO and co-founder of The Sandbox.
Throughout its history Lionsgate has been nominated for 129 Academy Awards and has a rich catalog of popular action and horror films.
The Sandbox and the companies
The Sandbox has become a popular platform for entertainment companies looking to enter the metaverse.
Warner Music Group partnered with The Sandbox in January to create a music world in the metaverse with performances by the company’s artists.
In March, the platform partnered with Korean entertainment company Cube Entertainment to bring K-culture to the metaverse.
And last month, The Smurfs animated film series The Smurfs announced the launch of The Smurfs Village in The Sandbox this summer.
