The Final Fantasy creator released a 30-minute teaser of the game called “Symbiogenesis” on Thursday, describing it as a “collectible artwork-driven digital experience” that can also be used as a profile picture on social media (PFP).

Square Enix’s foray into blockchain-enabled games is not off to a good start after its first NFT game received mixed reactions following its unveiling.

The game will be released in spring 2023, according to a Twitter post.

“The art will be able to be used as a profile picture on social networks (PFP) and as a character in a story that takes place in a virtual world where the player can “unravel” a mystery by completing quests revolving around issues of monopolization and resource distribution,” Square Enix wrote in a press release.

Square Enix’s decision to move towards web3 gaming demonstrates its commitment to embracing a community-driven gaming economy.

The company’s first reveal of its first NFT game receives mixed reactions from the mainstream, with leading gaming website Kotaku calling its new game “NFT garbage,” adding that the company appears to be “having an identity crisis of its own.”

Square Enix and Web3

Square Enix demonstrated its interest in the Web3 space in early 2019, when president Yosuke Matsuda pointed to blockchain technology as a possible key component of future games.

The video game maker switched to Web3 last year and since that time has made some investments and partnerships as it continues to change its direction.

However, the company has faced criticism from fans of some of its biggest games, as some traditional gamers resist the lure of blockchain gaming.

In March 2020, they led a $2 million investment round in The Sandbox metaverse.

Then in 2021, Square Enix first entered the Web3 space with the exclusive launch in Japan of NFT “digital stickers” for the Million Arthur anime and video game franchise via a blockchain platform in conjunction with Web3 studio Double Jump.Tokyo.

Later that year, the publisher signaled its growing ambitions in the blockchain space, including NFT-powered games.

Earlier this year, Square Enix collaborated with leading blockchain investment firm Animoca Brands’ subsidiary Animoca Brands, The Sandbox, to bring the game “Dungeon Siege” to the metaverse, a 3D virtual space where people can interact immersively through games, virtual concerts and other experiential events.

In May, the company showed its intentions to make web3 gaming a priority, after selling its Tomb Raider IP and other stuff for $300 million, before partnering in July with blockchain Efinity to launch its NFT project.

That same month, the video game maker and entertainment invested in crypto payments startup Zebedee’s $35 million funding round to bring bitcoin-based payments to gaming.

And in September, the company joined other game developers as a node validator on the Oasys Blockchain.

Although the project has not been widely disclosed until now, the news follows a desire expressed by Square Enix in a report in May, with aspirations to enter the Web3 and NFT gaming world.
