DraftKings has announced its partnership with the PGA Tour to launch an NFT-based fantasy golf game called Reignmakers.

The game allows fans to collect digital cards of PGA Tour golfers and enter contests to compete for cash prizes worth millions of dollars.

The Reignmakers PGA Tour experience will be launched on March 1, and the first set of NFT cards, called “Genesis,” will be minted on the Polygon blockchain, with each NFT available at different levels of rarity.

The collection is scheduled to launch on the DraftKings marketplace on March 6, 2023.

NFT-Based Fantasy Sports Games

DraftKings’ announcement of an NFT-based fantasy golf game follows the success of NFT-based fantasy sports games around the National Football League (NFL) and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The Reignmakers PGA Tour experience is an extension of DraftKings’ existing partnership with the PGA Tour, which began in 2019 and includes a traditional fantasy golf experience with no NFT elements.

Reignmakers PGA Tour

The Reignmakers PGA Tour experience will keep the same format as DraftKings’ previous NFT projects. Users will build their lineups by purchasing and trading digital cards based on real-world athletes.

They will earn points based on the actual performance of players in their respective lineups.

The game will allow DraftKings to “take gamified NFT and push our users into the fantasy space,” said a DraftKings spokesperson.

Premium NFT Greens Pass

The Reignmakers PGA Tour will begin launching on March 1 with a premium NFT Greens Pass, which will give players “preferred access as well as rewards throughout the season.”

This is similar to Reignmakers Football’s NFT Greens Pass, which is officially licensed by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), but not the league itself. The first set of PGA player cards will be released on March 6, ahead of the game’s first event, The Players Championship, from March 9 to 12.

PGA Tour and Web3

Last May, The PGA Tour filed branding applications to dive into the world of NFTs and the metaverse.

In September, The PGA Tour partnered with Autograph to launch an NFT platform.

The PGA Tour sees potential in NFT projects to drive fan affinity for players through ownership of their respective assets, citing pros like Jon Rahm and Max Homa who squared off last weekend at the Genesis Invitational.

Conclusion

The Reignmakers PGA Tour experience is DraftKings’ third effort into the digital sphere, following the introduction of fantasy soccer and UFC NFT-based fantasy games.

It is an exciting development for golf fans, who can now participate in a new and innovative way to enjoy their favorite sport while potentially winning cash prizes.

With the growing popularity of NFT-based fantasy sports games, it is likely that more sports leagues will jump on the bandwagon, providing fans with an even greater variety of digital collectibles and gaming experiences.
