Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is facing another lawsuit after a company called Meta sued it for trademark infringement.
When Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms last October, it was one of the company’s most important decisions regarding its future. Mark Zuckerberg stated at the time that the global social networking giant was moving toward the Metaverse, and the rebranding was intended to signal its commitment to the direction.
Since then, Meta has paid significant penalties for the small victories it has achieved so far. The company pledged to invest $10 billion in its metaverse campaign last year, which led to a significant drop in profits in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Meta.is vs. Meta
And now, Meta is being sued by another company called Meta for infringing its trademark. Meta.is claims that Facebook’s name change to Meta has infringed its trademark. The company on Tuesday announced plans to sue the social networking conglomerate after attempts to resolve the matter privately failed to materialize.
“On October 28, 2021, Facebook seized our brand and name META, which we have put our blood, sweat and tears into building for over twelve years,” reads a post on the Meta.is website. “Today, after eight months of trying to negotiate with Facebook in good faith to no avail, we have been left with no choice but to file a lawsuit against them.”
Meta.is argues that the various privacy lawsuits affecting Meta Platforms have made it impossible to share the name.
Meta.is
Meta.is is a pioneer in the immersive and experiential technology industry, founded in 2010. This small company has had significant historical and current involvement in the creation and development of virtual and real-world social communities associated with the industry, as well as fighting for the intellectual property rights, attribution and financial interests of creators.
Some of the expertise developed by these companies has been seen at major events around the world, such as SXSW, Coachella and Cannes Lions.
“Consumers are likely to mistakenly believe that Meta.is goods and services emanate from Meta Platforms and that Meta.is is associated with the toxicity that is inextricably linked to Meta Platforms.”
Although the smaller art installation company has a valid trademark for the name, it could have a hard time winning anything with the lawsuit. Facebook has registered several trademarks associated with its business since changing the name to Meta.
Meta’s stock has suffered badly since it officially adopted the new name. In May, Zuckerberg warned investors to expect a bigger cash burn before the Metaverse dream becomes a reality.
