Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Enters the Metaverse with Infinite Reality

Warner Bros Discovery Sports (WBD) announced a multi-year partnership with Infinite Reality to create virtual sports spaces in the metaverse.

The U.S. media company is expanding its metaverse strategy in an attempt to bring more users to the web3.

WBD and Infinite Reality

WBD wants to leverage Infinite Reality’s metaverse technology to create virtual hubs where users can interact with their favorite sports.

According to the announcement, sports communities, athletes and brands will be able to interact in virtual environments built around upcoming Discovery Sports Events properties.

Brands have jumped on the metaverse bandwagon in an attempt to expand their relationships with fans in digital environments.

This isn’t Warner Bros.’ first foray into web3 and the metaverse. Last week, the company partnered with web3 studio Eluvio to bring the “Lord of the Rings” films into the metaverse.

Warner Bros has partnered with marketplace NFT Niftys. In June, the global media conglomerate announced its third NFT collection inspired by the popular Looney Tunes TV series and comics.

However, this will be the company’s first major foray into virtual sports venues, as it aims to bring sports fans into web3, a next-generation version of the Internet that leverages artificial intelligence, blockchain and decentralized applications to democratize the web through community-based ownership.

François Ribeiro, head of Discovery Sports Events, commented on the partnership, “Warner Bros Discovery Sports’ partnership with Infinite Reality outlines how we plan to embrace the latest innovations and opportunities to deepen the connections between our audiences, owned series and partner brands to uncover possibilities for new areas of growth around different sports properties.”

According to Ribeiro, this partnership offers WBD the opportunity to explore new ways to engage with sports fans around the world. The metaverse spaces will allow the company to expand its experiences beyond live entertainment and enter new emerging platforms where fans spend much of their time.

Fans will be able to watch all rounds of the second season of the UCI Track Champions League on Warner Bros. Discovery Sports platforms, including discovery+, Eurosport and GCN+. The first round kicks off on November 12 in Mallorca.
