Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO and Nifty’s announce plans for Game of Thrones NFTs

The Game of Thrones NFT collection, created by Nifty’s and Warner Bros. Discovery and Daz 3D, will go on sale January 10, 2023.

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and HBO have partnered with Nifty’s NFT platform to release non-fungible collectible tokens based on the hit series.

An official launch date has not yet been confirmed, but fans can expect ‘Game of Thrones’ NFTs to be available in late 2022. The NFT experience, “Game of Thrones: Build Your Realm,” will allow fans to build a realm by collecting customizable avatars based on characters from the series and assorted packs of various collectibles, such as “equippable” items to “upgrade” their avatars, like weapons, companions and equipment, Nifty’s wrote on its blog. “Throughout the program, various themed packs will also be available,” WBD stated in its announcement.

Other NFTs will include special moments from the ‘Game of Thrones’ series, characters and locations. The experience will also include “themed activities [and] on-site engagements” that fans can enjoy, WBD stated.

The company did not disclose pricing.

“Our goal, as always, with fans is to create new ways for them to interact with the stories and characters they love,” Josh Hackbarth, head of NFT business development for Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement.

WBD is likely looking to generate additional revenue with the release of ‘Game of Thrones’ NFTs, arguably one of HBO’s most popular franchises. The company is in need of liquidity after suffering a net loss of $3.4 million last quarter.

Jeff Marsilio, co-founder of Niftys, said, “The Game of Thrones experience has been a long time coming. Our teams have worked diligently to create an interactive collectible experience that allows Game of Thrones fans to continue their journey and live inside the series. We are excited to introduce more fans to digital and Web3 collectibles.”

Discovery Global Consumer Products to continue to push the boundaries of imagination and creativity through a new type of digital collectible that will allow fans of the franchise to connect in ways never before seen.”

In addition, Daz 3D will collaborate with the companies in the development, design and production of this NFT experience. This is not the first time the media company has collaborated with Nifty’s, having launched the “Looney Tunes” NFTs in June.

WBD has also partnered with Funko for several NFTs.

Last month, Warner Bros. partnered with blockchain company Eluvio to launch the “Lord of the Rings” web3 movie experience, featuring NFT versions of the film.

The first Hero Box will go on sale January 10, 2023 and will contain digital collectibles and avatars from the northern regions of Westeros. Once purchased, collectors will have the option to open it, keep it sealed or even trade their box with other fans.

Each Series 1 Hero Box will contain:

  • One Avatar Hero (or Legendary Hero)
  • Nine resource cards you’ll need to Build Your Realm
  • Three cards featuring iconic scenes, characters and locations from the series.

Game of Thrones: Build Your Realm is the first digital collectible experience created for fans of the franchise. The multi-chapter program will continue through themed activities, on-site participation and additional digital collectibles.

Additional collectible cards will include iconic moments, locations, characters and more from the Game of Thrones series that will help each collector build their own kingdom.
