September 10, 2022 – Sky Mavis, the creators of the hit NFT title Axie Infinity, announced a $2.4 million grant for eSports to be paid out in various tournaments and invitationals, and Method MetaGuild has been named the first official recipient of the grant.
The recent early access launch of Axie Infinity by Sky Mavis: Origins, formerly Axie Infinity: Origin, has provided an avenue to further develop and expand its esports initiatives. The company will allocate 160,000 AXS ($2.4 million) to be split between Q4 2022 and Q2 2023.
To date, Axie Infinity has enabled 94 tournaments through its grant program, which is designed to help Axie’s competitive scene thrive by spreading AXS across multiple regions and skill levels. The grant model will be broken down as follows:
- Major tournaments – $200,001 – $1,000,000 prize money
Major events with substantial prize pools, robust online qualifiers and a significant physical presence with a LAN final.
- Smaller tournaments – $50,001 – $200,000 prize money
Smaller scale events with fewer prizes, some online qualifiers and smaller capacity physical LAN finals.
- Invitationals and online leagues – $10,000 – $50,000 prize pool.
Purely online tournaments with no physical presence, such as leagues, cups and invitational tournaments that have some open qualifiers.
- Local tournaments – $1,000 – $9,999 in prize money.
Regional and local amateur events for smaller organizers, scholarships and emerging regions.
In addition, Method MetaGuild has expanded into Axie Infinity eSports as it continues to build on its core values to create new and exciting ways to engage its community, celebrate competitive success and maximize the potential of players and creators around the world.
As the first recipient of the third Axie Infinity esports grant, Method MetaGuild will host online and LAN competitions with a total prize pool of $160,000.
“The launch of Axie Infinity: Origins is a key milestone in Axie’s roadmap that will allow us to unlock the next level of Axie Esports. It has been very encouraging to see more of our players engage with Axie Esports and more traditional players enter the Axie ecosystem as we continue to up the ante,” commented Andrew ‘Zyori’ Campbell, Head of Program, Esports and Content Creators at Sky Mavis.
