The television series Stranger Things will have a VR spin-off. The development is being handled by a well-known VR studio.

VR developer Tender Claws (The Under Presents, Virtual Reality 2) has partnered with Netflix to launch Stranger Things VR, an officially licensed VR game based on the hit streaming series.

Stranger Things VR is the first fully VR game Netflix is developing as part of its broad gaming initiative to diversify its media offerings.

The App Lab has also launched a free VR mini-game called Eden Unearthed, based on the animated series Eden.

Set for release next year on all major VR platforms, this psychological horror action game will put you in the shoes of the main antagonist of the fourth season, Vecna.

Stranger Things VR will launch on “major VR platforms” in winter 2023 and there’s no word yet on official pricing, but we can probably expect more information in the coming months. For more information, visit tenderclaws.com/strangerthingsvr.

Stranger Things and Tender Claws

With Tender Claws, Netflix has found the perfect VR studio for such an experience. The team has proven with Virtual Reality 1 and 2, as well as The Under Presents, that it has a knack for twisted, surreal worlds and knows how to take advantage of the medium.

According to Tender Claws, Stranger Things VR will allow the series to be experienced from a “new perspective.” In addition to exploring unknown realities, you’ll invade the dreams of fan-favorite characters, battle humans and creatures using telekinetic abilities, and shape the hive mind as you help Vecna plot her revenge against Eleven and Hawkins.

Tender Claws is also a big fan of Stranger Things and is developing the VR game in collaboration with the writers of the TV series. So authenticity is guaranteed.

“We are thrilled to be able to live in the Stranger Things universe and immerse ourselves in the rich inner worlds of its characters through Tender Claws’ unique approach to interwoven worlds and immersive dreamscapes,” said Tender Claws directors Samantha Gorman and Danny Cannizzaro in a joint statement. “As fans, we want this game to be very special and are thrilled with the support and enthusiasm we’ve received from Netflix and the Stranger Things creative team.”

Netflix and virtual reality

Those who have been following the development of the VR industry in recent times will recall that Netflix already has a few VR experiences under its belt. In 2017, the company launched a VR experience in the Stranger Things universe.

The streaming service also has a virtual reality app that allows users to watch Netflix on a virtual screen. However, it has been a long time since the app received a proper update.

In the past, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has been quite cautious about VR, pointing out the potential of AR.

With the success of Meta Quest 2 and the impending launch of Playstation VR 2, Netflix may want to test what the virtual reality market has to offer in the coming years.
