Metaverse is ill-defined and needs cryptocurrencies, VR and AI to succeed, says Vitalik Buterin

Interview with Vitalik Buterin about the Metaverse
Pepecoin: Good evening and welcome to Cryptochat! Today we have a very special guest, this is Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum. Vitalik, thank you very much for accepting the invitation.

Vitalik: It’s a pleasure to be on your show, Pepecoin.

Pepecoin: Let’s start with the Metaverse. In a recent lecture you said that “the Metaverse is ill-defined”. Could you explain what you meant?

Vitalik: Sure. When people talk about the Metaverse, they often refer to a 3D virtual universe, in which we can all interact. But I think this definition is too limitedThe Metaverse also includes technologies such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies.

Pepecoin: So, would you say that the Metaverse is more than just a virtual reality experience?

Vitalik: Yes, definitely. The Metaverse is a space where the digital and the physical merge. It’s a place where we can work, play, socialize and much more.

Pepecoin: There are many companies, such as Meta (formerly Facebook), that are investing heavily in the Metaverse. Are you worried that these companies will end up controlling it?

Vitalik: Yes, I am a little bit worried. I think the Metaverse should be an open, decentralized space. I don’t want one company to be in control of everything.

Pepecoin: That makes sense. So how do you envision the Metaverse evolving in the future?

Vitalik: It’s hard to say for sure, Pepecoin. Right now, we’re seeing a struggle between open source initiatives like the Open Metaverse Foundation and closed, proprietary platforms like Meta and Roblox. But regardless of who comes out on top, it’s clear that the Metaverse is still in its early stages and has a long way to go in terms of definition and development.

Pepecoin: What can be done to prevent this from happening?

Vitalik: I think it is important that we support open source projects that are working on developing a decentralized Metaverse. It is also important that we educate people about the Metaverse and its potential risks.

Pepecoin: Vitalik, thank you very much for your thoughts. It has been a pleasure talking to you.

Vitalik: Thank you, Pepecoin.

Pepecoin: Well folks, that’s it for today. I hope you enjoyed this interview with Vitalik Buterin. And remember, the future of the Metaverse is in our hands – see you next time!
