Former NBA All-Star Magic Johnson filed trademark applications for his name and for “Building. Magic. Together” to participate in Web3.
The applications were submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office on March 16, 2023, and state that the NBA legend plans to promote virtual products such as sports trading cards, sports memorabilia, sports collectibles, apparel, and other items for use in virtual environments and online.
The applications also indicate that non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will be offered, as well as a digital marketplace for buyers and sellers of digital goods and digital assets.
Michael Kondoudis, a trademark attorney specializing in Web3-related registrations, posted the news on his Twitter today

This is not the first time an NBA player has filed a trademark application related to Web3; LeBron James, LaMelo Ball and Kevin Durant have already done so.
Scottie Pippen collaborated with Orange Comet in December to develop an NFT collection of 1,000 limited-edition pairs of virtual sneakers.
The NBA, meanwhile, signed a multi-year agreement with Sorare in September to develop the first NFT-based fantasy basketball game, in which users can digitally create teams of players from the relevant league and score points based on their real-life performances.
Magic Johnson and Web3
Last year, Magic Johnson became the latest NBA legend to jump on the metaverse bandwagon after purchasing metaverse-based soccer and basketball teams from SimWin Sports.
