Lenovo, one of the world’s largest computer companies by unit sales, kicked off its Tech World 2022 event on Tuesday, offering attendees a preview of the company’s latest product innovations and green strategies.

The massive event featured high-level speakers from AMD, VMware, Accenture, Intel, DreamWorks, Qualcomm and many others, who will discuss the future of interoperable and sustainable extended reality (XR), computing and infrastructure solutions.

In a pre-event roundtable Q&A, executives discussed upcoming trends in the Chinese-American tech giant’s operations with a wealth of insights and product revelations for the company.

Executives from the Beijing, China- and North Carolina, U.S.-based company included:

  • Dr. Yong Rui, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer
  • Luca Rossi, Executive Vice President of Lenovo’s Smart Devices Group
  • Kirk Skaugen, Executive Vice President, Infrastructure Solutions Group
  • Arthur Hu, Chief Technology Officer, Solutions and Services Group
  • Mary Jacques, Director of Global Environmental Affairs and Sustainability

Here’s what XR Today learned about the company and its focus on the future of the business.

Keynote address on the future

In a keynote speech, Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang talked about how Lenovo doubled its investment in research and development (R&D) to commit to more sustainable and productive solutions.

Speaking of the Metaverse, Yang explained how smarter technology will change the way people “define the future workspace,” combining the virtual and physical worlds.

Workers in sectors such as design, education and workspace collaboration, among many others, would benefit from immersive technologies, including virtual spaces and digital twins, he added.

Explaining, he stated:

“The workspace of the future sets us free. We bring together the best of both worlds-the touch and feel of the real workspace and the access and reach of the virtual workspace-under the convenience and flexibility of switching between the two.”

Lenovo’s devices focus on “adaptive intelligence, security, eco-friendliness and innovative form factors,” he said, citing emerging technologies such as AI, Metaverse and cloud computing.

Yang added that such innovations were the “building blocks that we can leverage to build the different types of buildings like other vertical industrial solutions.”

In conclusion, he said:

“We should not limit ourselves to innovating to drive productivity. We must not limit ourselves to using technology to create economic value. We all have a responsibility to help make the world a better place, especially in the face of so many challenges related to climate change and energy scarcity.”

He called on the technology industry to work to make the planet more sustainable, adding that technology plays a “role in that innovation” and that Lenovo is “ready for this challenge.”

Opportunities in the metaverse

Asked by XR Today whether the Metaverse will become a central driving force for IT solutions and infrastructure, Dr. Rui said that “it definitely is.”

In terms of IT solutions, he referred to both new opportunities and IT technologies. Dr. Rui explained that several new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), edge computing, 5G, Web 3.0 and others, were “converging in the Metaverse.”

The Metaverse also created more computing and business opportunities, specifically with front-end devices such as AR, VR and XR, and back-end computing servers, he said, citing Rossi’s work.

Elaborating, he said:

“We also have software layers where we can edit in metaspace, do 3D modeling and environment reconstruction, and then we also have our friend [Arthur Hu], who is building solutions by leveraging front-end devices, back-end computing technology and the software layer to build vertical solutions. All of this combined generates a lot of new computing technologies.”

Executives and partner companies have gathered to discuss the future of the Metaverse and its ThinkReality, Motorola and other solutions.

The free, day-long event highlighted Lenovo’s future products and solutions for hybrid work, mixed reality and the Metaverse, featured keynote speeches from senior executives from around the tech world and outlined plans for green computing and operations, along with on-demand sessions for attendees.

The company has been driving the building of the industrial and enterprise metaverse with a number of products, including its ThinkReality VRX, A3 and other headsets, along with updates to the ThinkReality platform.

The event comes just weeks after the company headed to Europe’s Immerse Global Summit (IGS) 2022 on Madeira Island, Portugal, to unveil the firm’s VRX headsets for professional use.

Jason McGuigan, Lenovo’s Director of Commercial Virtual Reality, unveiled the product along with numerous ideas for the Metaverse in a major keynote for the event.

Other product introductions included a rollable display concept for PCs and smartphones, Cyber Spaces holographic immersive telepresence solution and ThinkEdge server technologies.
