The popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Ragnarok is coming to the metaverse. Ragnarok creator Gravity has partnered with leading metaverse gaming platform The Sandbox to create an immersive version of the game.

According to the announcement, Ragnarok LAND will be built in The Sandbox’s metaverse, allowing the Web3 gaming platform to offer various content and NFTs using Ragnarok’s IP.

In addition, the new Ragnarok metaverse will allow users to participate in a Game Jam based on its universe and characters.

The Ragnarok IP is Gravity’s flagship gaming product, with service on both web and mobile. It features several games, including “Ragnarok M: Eternal Love, Ragnarok Origin, Ragnarok X: Next Generation, Ragnarok V: Returns and Ragnarok Begins.”

The company also owns the rights to online animated series based on the Ragnarok universe and characters.

And Cindy Lee, CEO of The Sandbox Korea, acknowledges the popularity of the Ragnarok IP worldwide, and lauds it as one of the reasons the metaverse company was excited to forge a partnership with Gravity.

“Through this partnership, the excitement and joy that Ragnarok brings to gamers can be adapted in a new way through metaverse content,” he said.

While Harry Choi, commercial director of Gravity’s business division, commented, “We are preparing various content with the Ragnarok IP for users to enjoy in the metaverse as well. Stay tuned.”

Choi believes the partnership is important for Ragnarok players around the world because they will now be able to experience the game in The Sandbox metaverse.

Gravity is not the only South Korean game company to partner with Web3 companies. Earlier this year, Netmarble signed a memorandum of understanding with Binance to create blockchain-based products. Separately, Anicube Ent has partnered with The Sandbox to bring K-Culture to the metaverse.

Although major gaming companies continue to foray into Web3, not everyone agrees with the decision. Some game developers, such as GSC, the creators of STALKER2 and Ubisoft, have faced backlash from their communities after announcing their plans to introduce NFTs into games.
